Pat's Journey
Pat learned about ALIenergy from her Housing Officer, who joined a Fuel Poverty Awareness Session. After her electricity account moved from SSE to OVO, Pat received a £6,000 bill. She faces major challenges due to severe disabilities and multiple health conditions, spending most of her day in bed and using an electric wheelchair at home.
Advice and Impact
With the guidance and support provided by our Affordable Warmth Advisor, Pat felt empowered to address the issue with OVO herself. This support not only gave her the confidence to act independently but also enhanced her understanding of her electric storage heating system, the importance of accurate meter readings, and her current tariff. Additionally, Pat is now aware of the upcoming RTS switch off and knows she will require a meter upgrade when OVO is able to facilitate it.
Financial Gain
Our advisor applied to the Housing Association's fund and Pat was awarded £500 to help with her energy costs, and she was also provided with a heated throw and an air fryer to further support her wellbeing and comfort at home.
Additional Benefits
During the house visit our advisor noted that Pat had lived there for 20 years and her health and mobility had deteriorated considerably over that time. Her new electric chair was oversized for the property and there was noticeable damage to doorways, walls and heaters. In addition Pat was unable to reach the boost control in her kitchen for hot water. Despite raising these concerns multiple times with her Housing Officer, no action had been taken. Our advisor brought these issues to the attention of the Housing Association, both via email and in discussion with the Head Housing Officer. This intervention resulted in Pat being prioritised for a new, purpose-built adapted home, into which she moved after its completion.
