STEM workshops and the summer ahead

The early summer period has seen Education Officers, Katie and Michael once again in action, with a series of workshops being delivered in two of the three high schools in the project area supported by our funders at ScottishPower Renewables.  At Lochgilphead Joint Campus and Campbeltown Grammar the focus was to add to the varied and engaging activities that schools had lined up for their new intake of S1 pupils during the transition days at their new schools.

The sessions themselves reflected the wider aims of the project, giving participants the chance to explore and have fun with four STEM-related challenges. From cup towers to marble runs, model wind turbines to solar powered vehicle races, these quick-fire activities proved absorbing ways for pupils to engage with some important STEM concepts, while learning to work together in their new year groups at the same time.

We’re looking forward to delivering the session again at Tarbert as soon after the return from the summer break as we can arrange to be there. In the meantime, preparations are underway for the Education team to be out and about at upcoming community events. Joining forces with our colleagues from ALIenergy’s Affordable Warmth team, Education Officers will be attending three events: the Kintyre show on Friday 4th August, the Islay show on Thursday 10th August and the Mid Argyll Show on Saturday 12th August. There’ll be opportunities to see and find out about the work that ALIenergy does across its different project areas, along with fun renewable energy gadgets to see and experiment with and no doubt a competition to enter. We’re hoping for a visit from some of the pupils we’ve worked with this year and previously, not to mention from many supporters of the work we do who have regularly dropped in to say hello in the past. Hope to see you on one of the upcoming dates too!
