Opportunities for Fishing Communities in Argyll

A PROJECT PART-FINANCED BY AXIS 4 OF THE EUROPEAN FISHERIES FUND

Introduction
The ‘Renewable Energy: Opportunities for Fishing Communities in Argyll’ project assisted active fishing communities of Argyll to build capacity by developing qualifications, a skills base and working practices to enable them to take advantage of new business and employment opportunities alongside fishing. It was expected that these opportunities are primarily within the growing renewable energy industry due to the wealth of wind, wave and tidal resources in the region, and possibly available through provision of workboat services or marine survey work for example. Many of the skills may also enable fishermen to benefit from growth in other sectors, such as aquaculture, tourism, scientific research and monitoring.

As part of this project, we offered the following course:

  • Marine Mammal Observer Training
  • STCW Basic Safety Training
  • First Aid at Work
  • RYA Powerboat
  • Risk Assessment
  • Certificate in Maritime Studies: Able seafarer/tug rating SCQF level 5
