Energy Efficiency

Saving energy in your home or business can reduce your bills - and help the environment too!

  • If you were to save just 20% of the energy you use each day, you'll help control climate change.
  • Every household in the UK creates around 6 tonnes of CO2 every year - this is six times the weight of waste that the average household sends to landfill.
  • The average household can potentially save 2 tonnes of carbon every year, also saving around £250 a year - by taking some simple energy saving steps
  • Businesses can benefit too - reducing energy bills by 20% could add the same amount to your profits as a 5% increase in sales.

By following these few simple steps you can make a big difference:

  1. Turn down the heating - adjusting your thermostat down by 1C or using one hour less heating a day could cut fuel bills by 10%
  2. . Don't set your water heather thermostat higher than 60°C/140°F
  3. Insulate your home (loft insulation can save around 20% and cavity wall insulation can save up to 40%, on bills)
  4. Prevent heat escaping from your windows - close your curtains at night
  5. Always turn off the lights when you leave the room
  6. Switch off appliances and don't leave equipment on charge unnecessarily (appliances left on standby use more than £1billion worth of energy in the UK every year)
  7. Use the half load or economy programme if you are not filling up the washing machine, tumble dryer or dish washer
  8. Use less - boil only the water actually needed for a cup of tea (if everyone did this, then UK households could save enough electricity to run practically all the street lighting in the country)
  9. Use energy saving light bulbs - just one can save you £60 over the lifetime of the bulb as they last for up to 10 times longer than ordinary bulbs (if every UK household installed just one low energy light bulb, enough energy would be saved in a year to supply all the lighting in 2 million homes)
  10. Fix any leaking taps and make sure they are fully turned off - a dripping hot water tap wastes energy and in one week wastes enough hot water to fill a bath

A win-win situation - you get lower fuel bills and we all get a direct reduction in carbon emissions
